blending tradition with the contemporary...

It all started with the idea of doing hand block printing on cotton sarees, as a hobby for a housewife with time on her hands. So it on August 13, 1977, in a cottage at the bottom of a vineyard with two block printers on a six metre table the first saree was printed.
The initial learning experience continued for two years until 1979 when exports to Japan started. This gave the activity an entirely different dimension: it became a business. In 1980, the Secunderabad store was opened. In 1981 our first exhibition at the Aakar Art Gallery, Mumbai (Bombay) was held. Exhibitions became a regular feature in Bombay (Mumbai), Bangalore and Madras (Chennai).
1981 also saw the beginning of the company's long and continuing association with Laxma Goud; an eminent artist well known for his etchings. His first designer collection, Print Expression I, was held in 1982 at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Bombay. Followed by Print Expression II at the Lalit Kala Academy, Delhi in 1983. And by Print Expression III at the company's store in Secunderabad in 1985.
The 1980s also saw hectic activity in areas of quality improvement, growth of production capacity. And an increase in sales to Japan and France.
The product range enlarged to include ready-to-wear clothing including kaftans and salwar-kameez suits. In 1992 we began exporting to Artipresent (Stuttgart), Bijenkorf (Amsterdam) and Conran (Paris). To improve domestic market coverage showrooms were opened in Bangalore (August 1994) and Delhi (June 1996).
The needs of the domestic market are constantly changing - new designs, new products, new fabrics. At Shafali we believe we have the creative strengths to respond to this challenge with the support of our in-house team of innovative designers and artists.
We offer a unique collection of handmade Indian textiles that includes household linen, suits, sarees and kaftans. All are hand-printed using a range of cotton fabrics: khadi, kalamkari, Ikat - block and screen printed. There is a variety of designs; geometric and traditional, in vibrant earthy colours as well as pastels. |
